The Brodhead Optimist Club offers a local Essay and Oratorical Contest annually in February open to all youth.

Essay Contest

The Essay contest is open to any youth under the age of 19 as of December 31 of the current school year in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. All contestants must enter through an Optimist Club. Unsolicited manuscripts cannot be accepted. All Club contests are held BEFORE February 28, 2008. Winners progress to the next level. Club prize – medallion; District prize – plaque and a $650 college scholarship; International prize – first-place plaque, $6,000 college scholarship; second-place plaque, $3,750 college scholarship; third-place plaque, $2,250 college scholarship.

2007-2008: This coming year's topic is "Today's Choices Shape My Future." GOOD LUCK!! Contact Nancy Sutherland at 897-4481 for more local information.

2006-2007: This year's topic was "I want to make a difference because... " Nancy Sutherland and Susan Welch chaired this project for us and did a great job this year. Thanks gals!

 

2005-2006: This year's topic was "I'm unique because..." Grace Policastro is chairing this project for us again this year and doing a wonderful job.

1st Place- Sarah Earlywine, 2nd Place- Nathaniel Welsh, and 3rd Place- Jenna Blizzard.

Thank you to all who participated this year and we hope to have many more in the future.

 

Oratorical Contest

The Oratorical Contest is open to any boys or girls who have not reached age 16 as of December 31 during the current school year and must be educated in the Unites States, Canada or the Caribbean.  This contest is designed to not only give students public speaking experience but also to give a boy and a girl an opportunity to win a $1,500 college scholarship. Students must prepare a 4-5 minute speech to be judged on poise, content, delivery, and effectiveness. Contest entry ends by late March 2008. Winners progress to the next level. Club prize – medallion; Zone prize – plaque; District prize – plaque and either two $1,500 scholarships or a first-place scholarship of $1,500, a second-place scholarship of $1,000, and a third-place scholarship of $500.

2007-2008: This coming year's topic is "Why me? Why not?" GOOD LUCK!!
